Over 200 students in Year 7 and 8 took part in the Compass Project over the Christmas holidays. The Compass Project is designed to help students navigate the world: to link what they are learning in school to the world around them. Research shows that the more students know about the world around them, the better they learn. So, for example, if they know about Stephen Lawrence before they study him in Art, the knowledge will “stick” better. Therefore, the Compass Project is a list of activities that students could do over the holidays to prepare themselves for learning new content in the next term. The Christmas project covered a huge variety of activities, such as visiting the People’s History Museum to learn about voting and protests in preparation for Drama, completing some Maths problems from the challenging puzzle book “Can You Solve My Problems?” to get their brain ready for the next Maths topic, and watching "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" to prepare for the study of developing countries in Geography.

The enthusiasm and engagement from students was overwhelming, with them producing project books, posters and information leaflets. All those who evidenced they’d done one of the suggested activities were entered into a prize draw. Well done, Year 7 and 8 – bring on the Easter Compass Project!
