At Chorlton High School we have an extensive Early Careers Teacher (ECT) programme which helps staff to develop in all aspects of being a new teacher and underpins our core values. This means that we ensure that our NQT’s are Successful, Creative and Happy in the same way that we ensure our learners are.

The ECT programme includes:

  • expert mentor support
  • weekly training sessions
  • a residential course
  • coaching
  • opportunities to observe outstanding staff
  • support from student leaders to improve planning, teaching and marking

ECT provision at Chorlton High School has been praised by Ofsted and is recognised across Manchester for its impact on quality of teaching. The high level of support provided ensures that the majority of ECTs end their first year in the profession as confident and strong practitioners.

Diane Matthews

What have you enjoyed most about you NQT year at CHS?

  • I have really enjoyed the diversity of the classes I have been able to teach (in terms of ability and background) and have loved working collaboratively with other NQTs and other colleagues in my department.

How did you find the support?

  • The support of both my subject mentor and professional mentor throughout has been really encouraging and has helped me to build confidence both in and out of the classroom with regard to my role as a teacher. Support with particular classes and help with new strategies and approaches has been excellent throughout the year.

What are you looking forward to moving into your RQT year?

  • Moving forward to my RQT year I am looking forward to the challenge of having my own Year 11 class and taking on further responsibilities through my new role (Responsibility in Maths) as well as conducting some research into a topic of my own interest. Having had great support through my NQT year I am now feeling more confident to have more independence looking and feeling less of a need to rely on others.

What advice would you give to new NQTS?

  • Keep organised and don’t be afraid to keep trialling new things! Make sure you build good relationships with pupils (even if it is challenging at the start) because it will pay off!

What have you enjoyed most about you NQT year at CHS?

  • I have enjoyed the freedom to teach in my own style whilst still having the support of more experienced teachers.

How did you find the support?

  • The support was great, I especially found doing learning walks beneficial!

What are you looking forward to moving into your RQT year?

  • I am looking forward to getting another year of teaching under my belt now that I am comfortable and settled.

What advice would you give to new NQTS?

  • My advice would be to work as much as possible at the start of term so you have breathing room to fit in work around other unexpected things that arise as the term progresses. My final bit of advice would be to just always have an open mind to feedback and do everything you can to be the best teacher you can be, every day I pick up tips and tricks, steal good ideas whenever possible!
