Our Teaching Internship offers undergraduates an opportunity to gain knowledge and practical classroom experience as well as a range of exciting whole-school and extra-curricular activities.
The internship aims to give STEM and MFL undergraduates the opportunity to immerse themselves into a rapidly developing, diverse and innovative secondary school context.
Excellent teaching and learning is at the heart of all that we do, our 3-week internship covers the pedagogy of teaching Mathematics, Physics, Languages and Computing to ensure interns have a full understanding of teaching in a secondary school setting. Chorlton High School will also provide training workshops on useful skills including ‘pitch, voice and presence’ and ‘effective questioning’ as well as subject specific training.
Our programme gives interns experience across all aspects of teaching, with the idea that it will help inform their decision on applying for teacher training.
Applications will open in December and interviews will follow shortly after this.
I applied for the MFL internship at Chorlton High School prior to my Initial Teacher Training course. I went to visit for a day and fell in love. I was pleased to see how the school and teachers fostered a culture of love for learning and this was also visible in the students.
The MFL department was really welcoming on my visit, and after applying, I was accepted to do both my internship and ITT course at Chorlton. From day one I felt very welcomed by all staff, and I was made to feel as if I was a staff member in the school and not just an intern or a trainee. Doing it this way was very helpful, as my internship allowed me to get to know the students and the school teaching and learning methods.
During the three weeks of the internship, I helped in the languages department to support students with their speaking exams, and also took part in Chorlton High's exciting ELE (Extended Learning Experience) days.
My internship made the start of my ITT course in September much easier, I already knew the majority of my students, I was familiar with my lessons and their structure. My ITT year helped me develop as a teacher and really focus on my teaching style. I was able grow within a school that matched my values and ethos and one that I wanted to work in.
I was lucky enough to be able to apply for an MFL Teacher post at Chorlton High at the end of my ITT, and now I am completing my first ECT year as an MFL teacher. I love being part of this community, giving back and contributing to it with my enthusiasm for languages and for learning. My experience has been fantastic and it has strengthened my love for teaching. I would highly recommend my pathway, apply for internship before proceeding onto your ITT course at Chorlton High School.
I found a school-led route into teaching beneficial because it offered immersive, hands-on experience from day one.
This approach allowed me to develop practical classroom management skills, build strong relationships with students, and receive immediate feedback from experienced mentors.
Additionally, being integrated into the school community early on provided a deeper understanding of the school’s culture and policies, which is invaluable for a seamless transition into a full-time teaching role.
