Since becoming a Specialist Arts College in 2002, Chorlton High School has been completely re-built, at a cost of over £17 million. The extra funding we received as a specialist Arts College, and having a new school built completely from scratch, has allowed us to install state-of-the-art facilities in all areas, especially those for Performing Arts. These facilities are used extensively by students of Chorlton High, and by the local community.
Performing Arts facilities
Our community theatre, The Blue Box Theatre, offers a fantastic environment to host productions and events. Seating up to 300, it has up-to-the-minute lighting, sound, and AV systems, as well as Box Office and wardrobe facilities. As such, it is in high demand from the local community and professional touring groups alike. It is a multi-functional theatre, being well suited to drama, dance, and music productions, as well as conferences and movie presentations.
As well as the Theatre (see above), there are also three separate drama spaces.
These spaces are used for drama lessons during the normal school day. After school, and at weekends, several community drama groups use these spaces along with extra-curricular school drama activities. If there is a large production taking place in the Theatre, these versatile drama spaces can also be used for rehearsals, performer holding areas, changing rooms and even 'green rooms' for celebrity guests!
With a Recording Studio, three large music ICT rooms, and three practice rooms, Chorlton High School provides a brilliant environment for our budding musicians. As with our other Performing Arts facilities, our music facilities are also available for community use outside of school hours.
We have two designated Dance Studios at Chorlton High School. With floor-to-ceiling mirrors along two walls at opposite ends of the studio, in front of which are sturdy ballet rails, and with a continuous smooth wooden floor, the Dance Studio is ideal for school and community dance groups.
The large sports hall is well used during the school day and by local sporting groups in the evenings. The sports hall accommodates indoor cricket, netball, hockey, football, badminton, volleyball and basketball. The hall can also be partitioned into two halves to host different groups or activities.
We are fortunate to have a full size, flood lit, all weather pitch on school grounds which can be used for a variety of sports come rain or shine. This great facility is available to hire out of school hours.
Other outdoor sporting facilities include long jump, basketball and netball courts and a climbing wall.
The Gymnasium has a specialist Granwood/Gransprung floor which makes it an ideal space for gymnastics and martial arts. The space is equipped with wall bars, beams, ropes, a trampoline spotting rig, basketball rings and a badminton court.
Large, segregated changing rooms with toilets and hot showers are available.
At Chorlton High School, we have a wealth of ICT facilities that underpin high quality teaching and learning and also ensure the efficient and smooth running of the school. Considerable time, effort and money has gone into planning our exciting ICT refurbishment programme, which will see a complete new business class Active Network, a full Wifi network throughout the school, new CCTV, Access Control, VOIP telephones and upgraded Cashless Catering systems. All student Windows PC’s in school will be new from September 2013, including those in the Bodey Library. Teaching staff will be provided with a personal mobile device to help them unlock the potential of using cutting edge Teaching and Learning methods using Tablet devices and Clever Touch TV’s .
The school has 5 large, dedicated ICT rooms, one is soon to be transformed into a “Computing Suite” to allow us to deliver the government’s new computing agenda. Computing lessons take place in these 5 rooms, which are also available for students use in their own time after school hours under Teacher supervision. Students have ample storage space on their own network drive, as well as filtered safe high-speed broadband Internet access.
Our school VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) is fully accessible in and out of school. Students can access ‘I am Learning’, Independent Assessments and Subject Zones and use their ‘e’ Portfolio to transport their school work in a secure and safe way to and from home.
All classrooms throughout the school have networked ICT facilities and there are also specialist ICT facilities for other subjects such as Language and Literacy, Maths, Modern Foreign Languages and Design & Technology, each with their own specialised software and hardware. The Design & Technology ICT Suite houses specialist CAD/CAM equipment eg; Laser Cutter, Router and CAMM 1 machines. The Arts, Media and Music Departments are equally very ICT rich and have their own specialist MAC ICT Suites to facilitate the delivery of the modern curriculums of Art, Photography, Media and Music.
We have more than 30 Interactive white boards and all classrooms have data projectors to allow the full use of modern software and multimedia. We are developing the use of Clever Touch Smart TV’s in 22 classrooms from September 2013 which will allow staff to use Display Note technology to increase creativity and innovation in the classroom.
We believe that the use of up-to-date, commercially compatible software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe CS6 Design and Web Premium (Photoshop etc), Final Cut and Serif Suite are essential to ensure that students are familiar with packages that they will encounter in higher education and the world of work.
The school's ICT facilities are backed up by a dedicated team of Technicians to ensure smooth operation of the school on a daily basis. Data backup and restore facilities are second to none to ensure that school confidential data is stored securely in two separate locations for security and resilience. Students’ Controlled Assessment work is safely managed and can be quickly recovered should it ever be required through the use of shadow copy.
Over 600 PCs, 58 MAC’s, 60 Kilometres of cabling, 13 data cabinets and a brand new server room make for a lively and interesting ICT environment with a rolling upgrade of the PC’s and network ensuring that no area is left behind as new technology is developed.
The Bodey Library is one of the most prominent features of our school. Occupying most of the first floor at the front of the school, the library has plenty of space including areas for quiet study and reading, as well as computer access.
The library holds more than 10,000 books and resources, including fiction and non-fiction books and a large Manga collection. It also has a range of newspapers and magazines for students to read and a dedicated Careers section with information on local colleges.
The Bodey library is a valuable resource for students from all year groups, and with ample natural light and great views, it's the ideal place to come and study.
